The Diagnosis of Periodontal Disease
Receiving the Care You Need
We all understand that taking care of our teeth is a very important thing. Diligence in the daily tasks of brushing and flossing are key to maintaining healthy teeth, gums and bones. Yet far too many neglect these important acts and may not even realize that they are in the early stages of periodontal disease because symptoms many times do not appear until this condition has progressed to an advanced stage. Though obtaining regular care from a San Diego dentist is always a wise decision, an immediate appointment should be made if you notice red, swollen or tender gums, bleeding, loose teeth, persistent bad breath, or changes to the way your teeth fit together.
Periodontal disease is an overarching term for two serious conditions:
- Gingivitis: the mildest form of periodontal disease, indicative by red and swollen gums but little to no pain.
- Periodontitis: when toxins produced by bacteria irritate the gums and stimulate an immune system response which in turn destroys the tissues of your gums and the underlying bone.
Unfortunately, this highly destructive process many times has mild symptoms and a sufferer may not comprehend the destruction that is occurring. Though primarily caused by poor dental hygiene, some studies show that up to 30% of people may be genetically predisposed to gum disease and that tobacco use is a primary risk factor in its development as well. Periodontitis may also be aggravated by poor nutrition, obesity, diabetes, stress, clenching or grinding of the teeth, puberty, pregnancy and menopause. Beyond causing tooth and bone loss, inflammation, and gum damage, complications from periodontal disease can include heart disease, respiratory problems and other systemic conditions.
